NEW YORK, NY (June 6, 2019) – Last night Hospitality Design magazine, the industry’s leading and premier design publication, announced the 2019 HD Awards winners at Cipriani 25 Broadway in New York. More than 400 people gathered to find out who would win the coveted honors in 24 project and 12 product categories, from locations and venues around the globe. A distinguished panel of industry professionals selected this year’s finalists and winners from 780 project and 330 product submissions.
“Last night was such an inspiring evening, celebrating some of the year’s best projects and products,” said Stacy Shoemaker Rauen, vice president of the Hospitality Design Group, and editor in chief, Hospitality Design magazine. “The ballroom was buzzing with esteemed firms representing their work from China to Spain to the United States. All of the winners and finalists raised the bar on experiential, thoughtful design.”
Jiyu Spa in Danyang, China was named Best in Show in projects, while Masque Collection by REPUBLIC OF II BY IV for Suite 22 Contract, took home Best in Show for products. New this year, HD honored ASH NYC from Brooklyn, New York with the Hotelier of the Year award. Brooklyn-based Studio Tack was named Design Firm of the Year. The projects jury included Ave Bradley, Creative Director and Global Senior Vice President of Design, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants; Alexandra Champalimaud, Founder, Champalimaud; Jim Merkel, CEO, Rockbridge; Glenn Pushelberg and George Yabu, Founding Partners, Yabu Pushelberg; and Brad Wilson, President, Ace Hotel Group and Atelier Ace. Project categories included Hotels, Public Spaces, and Restaurants with new categories Retail + Hospitality and Art + Branding.
Jurors for the products category were Gray Shealy, Associate Vice President of Architectural Design and Innovation, Royal Caribbean Cruises; Miriam Torres, Cofounder, Parker-Torres Design; Therese Virserius, Founder, Virserius Studio. These outstanding industry professionals judged product submissions in categories such as Flooring, Casegoods + Furniture, and Bath.
For the first time this year, Hospitality Design magazine partnered with West Elm to bring an innovative student product design competition into the HD Awards mix. The competition tasked current design students and recent graduates with designing a new chair or barstool collection to add to West Elm’s newest Restaurant Table Collection. A panel of product judges, including West Elm president Alex Bellos and Paulo Kos, vice president of design at West Elm Contract Furniture, evaluated entries on the bases of creativity, practicality, and function. The winning product will be manufactured by West Elm.
Laurie Sadove of the Pratt Institute in New York was named the student product design winner for her Tribeca Dining Chair, made with a simple wood or metal base, a modern curved backrest, and an upholstered seat.
Each winner and finalist received a beautiful glass and crystal award created by Preciosa.
